What is addiction

Addiction is a disease that affects every part of a person’s life and is also known as Substance Use Disorder. It is a serious progressive illness that affects every aspect of a person’s life – including personal relationships, finances, employment and physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.

Often described as a disease of the mind, body and spirit or a disease of loneliness or disconnection – a person in active addiction often feels very alone and isolated, with a low sense of self-worth and feelings of shame and failure.

With addiction comes a lot of pain and suffering not only for the person struggling with addiction but for their loved ones too.
Definition of Addiction

Addiction is a treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual’s life experiences. People with addiction use substances or engage in behaviors that become compulsive and often continue despite harmful consequences.

Prevention efforts and treatment approaches for addiction are generally as successful as those for other chronic diseases

What is Recovery?

Recovery from addiction means breaking free from the cycle of substance abuse and living a healthier, more fulfilling life. It involves overcoming physical dependence on drugs or alcohol, or compulsions to gamble, as well as addressing the underlying emotional, psychological, spiritual and behavioral factors that contribute to addiction.

Recovery is a journey of self-discovery, healing, and personal growth, often involving various forms of treatment, support, and lifestyle changes. It's about learning to manage cravings, cope with triggers, and develop healthier coping mechanisms while rebuilding relationships and pursuing goals and passions.

Recovery capital emphasizes the importance of addressing the multidimensional nature of addiction and recovery, recognizing that individuals draw upon a variety of resources and supports to achieve and maintain long-term sobriety and well-being. By enhancing personal, social, and community recovery capital, individuals can build resilience, overcome challenges, and thrive.
Gerry Carroll, Head of Recovery Support Services. "Our Recovery Support Services focus on building Recovery Capital - building on the resources a person needs both within themselves and within their community, to live a meaningful life in recovery."
